Established in 1976 with its first building being completed in 1982, Piritahi Marae stands on Te Huruhi Reserve, Waiheke Island and is the only marae on the island. The marae was established by Māori from various iwi from all over Aotearoa who had come to find Waiheke their home in the late 70’s and as such is a taura here marae. The marae takes its name from the coming together as one - in peace, of Ngā Puhi and Ngāti Pāoa, which was marked by the marriage of Eruera Patuone a Ngā Puhi chief and Takarangi (Riria) the sister of Te Kupenga, a Ngāti Pāoa chief, in the early 1830’sThe Marae is ngā hau e whā in that it welcomes peoples from all the four winds whilst due recognition and is respect is paid to Ngāti Paoa as Mana Whenua and the interests of the wider Pare Hauraki iwi. Standing on the foreshore of Te Huruhi bay on Waiheke’s southern coast the marae is a thriving community hub with a fully carved whare whakairo “Kia Piritahi”, whare kai “Ngakata”, childcare centre and Hauora. The marae is available for tangihanga, community use, group stays etc.Whare: Kia PiritahiWharekai: NgakataMaunga: PiritahaMoana: TikapaHui:Tikanga / Kawa: Kia Piritahi, Tainui whakaekeTangi:Tikanga / Kawa: Kia Piritahi, Tainui whakaekeBattalion: A Company – The GumdiggersRohe: TāmakiIwi / Rūnanga: Ngāti PaoaMarae Bookings:Send us an email with your inquiry.
