Established in 1978 under Auckland Mātaatua Society Incorporated, Mātaatua Marae located in Māngere offers cultural programmes, Kōhanga Reo, and has facilities available for hire. Mātaatua Marae plays an important role in maintaining Ngāti Awa kawa and tikanga within the urban setting of Auckland.
Comprising of Ngāti Awa descendants, the tribal group is rich in history with significant connections and relationships with whānau, hapū and iwi across the wider Auckland, Northland and Tainui regions.
Conceptualised in 1976, by Ngāti Awa and Ngāi Tūhoe Kaumātua, approval and support was granted by the Māori Queen Te Ataairangikaahu and Rangatira of Mana Whenua o Tāmaki Makaurau. In 1978, the Marae facilities including a Wharenui were built on Māngere leased land. The establishment of this Marae was an important step forward in recognising the role of providing a Marae-based community for Whānau and Hapū of Ngāti Awa living in Tāmaki Makaurau. Since Mātaatua Marae opened its doors, Marae participation has grown across all communities. The increasing well-being initiatives undertaken by Mātaatua Marae reflect the cultural realities of Ngāti Awa and the desire to engage in traditional knowledge and learning.
Mātaatua Marae encourages all Whānaunga, Manuhiri and Hapori to utilise their facilities, services and programmes. Services include; Kōhanga Reo, Catering services, Marae cultural experiences and spaces available for hire. The Marae-based programmes are underpinned by a strong knowledge base of Mātauranga Māori evidenced in Te Reo, Waiata and Tikanga programmes. Mātaatua Marae strives to maintain and strengthen tribal knowledge alongside local Iwi so that the kawa and tikanga remains with Ngāti Awa.
Kaumātua housing is also managed by the Marae. Future plans include developing social enterprises in the area of tourism, and self-sustaining initiatives that involve a commitment to environmental responsibilities.
